Free Stamp

Free Stamp is a pop art sculpture that is located in Willard Park, near downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Known as the world's largest office stamp, the aluminum and steel structure weighs 17,000 pounds and is 49 feet long and 28 feet wide. In 1982, Amoco Company commissioned Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen to build a scuplture that would serve as a focal point to their Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) building. Design and fabrication were completed by 1985. The original location of the sculpture was suppose to be across the street from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. The word, "FREE", was chose to honor the soldiers from the Civil War and to celebrate freedom from slavery. In 1986, British Petroleum (BP) purchased Sohio and felt that the word, "FREE", on the sculpture mocked their cooporate aquisition of an American company. The structure was placed into storage in a warehouse in Whiting, Indiana while a search for a new location was being conducted. In 1991, BP agreed to donate the sculpture to the City of Cleveland and was place in Willard Park where it currently sits today.
