The cache is located in Niobrara State Park. A Nebraska State park permit (yearly or daily) is required for entry.
Some claim that the Mormons dug the mile long canal that cuts along the west edge of the old Niobrara State Park and thus got the name of the Mormon Canal. Others believe that it was so named because of the tragedy that befell the Mormons there. During the difficult winter, illness swept through the camp. They buried their leader, his wife and eight others. When spring arrived, the party returned to Kanesville (now known as Council Bluffs).
There is a historical monument approximately 1/4 mile south of this location about the Mormons when they were here. See additional waypoint below for coordinates.
The bomb cyclone was March of 2019 when the Mormon Canal Bridge was washed away in what would be remembered as one of the worst floods in Siouxland history.
When the Spencer Dam broke and all the ice came through the Mormon Canal, it took away the whole cement bridge and approximately nine tons of it ended up in the trees where the Niobrara Park used to be.
Until a temporary, one-lane bridge was built in August of 2019, those who once lived 5 minutes from Niobrara had to drive an hour to get there.
.
The project involved repairs to the approach and girders of the Niobrara River Bridge and installation of a temporary bridge over the Mormon Canal to restore mobility followed by a permanent bridge.
The repaired Niobrara River Bridge and temporary Mormon Canal Bridge were opened to traffic in August 2019, just in time for the start of school. The permanent Mormon Canal Bridge opened a year later, ahead of schedule.
The bridge is now fully rebuilt,
