Geocache Description:

The Walnut Street Bridge, constructed in 1890 connected both the East and West shores of the Harrisburg area with the City Island recreation area.  For over 80 years it was open to all types of vehicles, however in 1972 the structural integrity of the bridge was compromised after the flooding from Hurricane Agnes which caused it to be restricted to being used only as a walking bridge.

On January 20, 1996, a major winter storm carried large amounts of ice down the river causing the collapse of two sections of the western span. Since that time, the East side has been reinforced and is still in use as a major way to access City Island, however the West was never rebuilt and remains closed to this day.

If you wish to see a short history of the bridge along with the events of that day and the collapse of the bridge, you may watch the video below.

To log the cache please answer the following questions:

  1. At the bottom of the steps to the bridge there is a kiosk with posted information about the bridge and area. What is the name of the person listed as the contact for the group?
  2. At the top of the bridge is a gate closing it off. How many thin vertical bars are there per section in the middle sections.
  3. Who placed a sign at the front of the bridge?

Please be kind and do not log after 10:00PM EST.
