Geocache Description:

Wildcat Mound is a spectacular geologic feature located in Mentor, WI in southwest Clark County north of Merrillan, WI and east of Humbird, WI. Wildcat Mound offers hiking opportunities that provide outstanding scenic vistas and a beautiful spot during fall color. In addition, county forest camping registration is available at this location. Wildcat Mound got its name since the area contains the highest concentration of Wildcats in the state of Wisconsin! If you are lucky you just might see one! Haha, just kidding, but it sure seems like an area where Wildcats would live!

While it is not very well known, Wildcat Mound is sometimes confused with Wildcat Mountain State Park south of Tomah and Sparta. Wildcat Mound is a free to visit park and has some of the most scenic and extraordinary hiking for hundreds of miles around. Within minutes of the trailhead, sandstone bluffs and cliff-faces are found in a pristine location and condition. For individuals or groups looking to gain a quick escape to a naturally beautiful area, Wildcat Mound offers one of the best scenic retreats in central Wisconsin.

Wildcat Mound is in a remote location. If driving from the north, south, or west the easiest access is to drive to Humbird and then head east on County Road B. If driving from the east the easiest access is to head east on highway and then head west on County Road B. The parking lot is just off of County Road B.

Since my name is Sneaky Wildcat, I decided that Wildcat Mound was the perfect spot to place my virtual reward. Enjoy your visit to Wildcat Mound! I discovered this beautiful and unique area with my parents back in the fall of 2020. The leaf color that year was incredible and the view from the top of Wildcat Mound was spectacular. The best time to visit Wildcat Mound is in the fall when the leaves are at peak! Wildcat mound can be visited during any time of the year, but I would not recommend attempting this virtual if there is a lot of snow or ice on the ground, since climbing up to the viewpoint would be dangerous! There are many high cliffs around Wildcat Mound and there are no fences or walls at the cliff edges. You assume all liability while looking for this virtual cache so geocache at your own risk! Cell phone service is not the best in this area either so keep that in mind before visiting! Download the example picture in the picture gallery before visiting!

This virtual cache will not be for everyone, due to the terrain rating of 4 and is therefore not wheelchair accessible nor recommended for those with mobility issues. This cache will require a short climb up to the top of the bluff (approximately 7-8 feet). No climbing gear nor experience is needed in order to get to gz and the top of Wildcat Mound.

In order to get credit for this virtual cache you will need to complete all of the tasks below.

  1. Take a picture of you or your GPS at gz with the view in the background. Please be very careful of the cliff behind you! There are no fences or walls along the cliff edges at Wildcat Mound. You do not need to get close to the edge in order to take the picture. If you are close enough to gz and have the view in the background as shown in the example picture in the image gallery, this will suffice for the picture requirement.
  2. When you are at the lookout, which direction is to your left and which direction is to your right?
  3. Estimate the height of the cliff to your right. Please use caution if you are around the cliff edges!

Please email me the answers BEFORE logging this as a find and upload your picture with your found it log. If I do not receive your answers AND a picture of you /or your GPS at gz then I will be forced to delete your log.
