Av utdanning har Grytten hovedfag i nordisk fra Universitetet i Bergen fra 1973 med hovedoppgava Ei gransking av talemålet på Midøy. Grytten var mellom 1973 og 1993 bestyrer for Aalesunds Museum. Han er kjent som byhistoriker og har utgitt en rekke bøker om byen Ålesund og folket der. Gjennom sitt virke som museumsmann arbeidet han for bevaring av det opprinnelige bygningsmiljøet i Ålesund og har mye av æra for at ålesunderne gjenoppdaget jugendstilen som preget mye av bysentrum slik det ble reist etter bybrannen i 1904.
Grytten er også en kjent foredragsholder som gjennom sine byvandringer og stående på sin lille trekrakk formidler byens historie med stort engasjement. Derigjennom har Grytten blitt en lokal kulturpersonlighet og en kjent figur i bybildet. I 2004 fikk Grytten Kommunikasjonsprisen i Møre og Romsdal på bakgrunn av en nominasjon som la vekt på hans sjeldent tydelige og konsekvente kommunikasjon ved bruk av enkle virkemidler. Prisen tildeles av Kommunikasjonsforeningen i Møre og Romsdal.
Harald Grytten ble i 2010 utnevnt til ridder av 1. klasse av Den Kongelige Norske St. Olavs orden «for hans betydningsfulle innsats for norsk kulturarv.»[1] Det ble samtidig opplyst at hans innsats innen by- og lokalhistorie var vektlagt ved beslutning om ordenstildeling.

Harald Grytten (born 5 December 1938 in Ålesund) is a Norwegian philologist and city historian.
Of education, Grytten has a master's degree in Nordic from the University of Bergen from 1973 with the main thesis An examination of the spoken language on Midøy. Between 1973 and 1993, Grytten was director of the Aalesund Museum. He is known as a city historian and has published a number of books about the city of Ålesund and the people there. Through his work as a museum man, he worked for the preservation of the original building environment in Ålesund and has much of an era for the Ålesunders to rediscover the Art Nouveau style that characterized much of the city center as it was built after the city fire in 1904.
Grytten is also a well-known speaker who, through his city walks and standing on his little wooden stool, conveys the city's history with great commitment. Through this, Grytten has become a local cultural personality and a well-known figure in the cityscape. In 2004, Grytten received the Communication Award in Møre og Romsdal on the basis of a nomination that emphasized his rarely clear and consistent communication using simple tools. The prize is awarded by the Communication Association in Møre og Romsdal.
In 2010, Harald Grytten was appointed a knight of the 1st class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav "for his significant contribution to Norwegian cultural heritage." [1] It was also stated that his efforts in urban and local history were emphasized in the decision order assignment.
