Geocache Description:

Mordialloc Pier was built in the 1850’s as a small jetty at the mouth of Mordialloc Creek. The early settlers of Mordialloc depended upon heavy materials and supplies being brought to them by ship as the roads were not much more than sand tracks and too poor for transporting goods.

A tender for a more substantial construction of the pier was issued in 1869 and in 1875 there was a campaign to lengthen the jetty by 300 feet. An impressive new pier was built by the early 1900’s.

At the turn of the century steamers began regularly transporting visitors from the City to Mordialloc. During the good weather it was a favourite place to promenade and the Moorabbin Shire band would often play. In these earliest times the pier was being promoted as a good place to fish.

Over the years the pounding waves damaged the pier causing part of the pier to wash away. A survey of the pier revealed the piles supporting it were riddled with worms and had significantly reduced in circumference due to natural erosion and corrosion. Money for repairs was an issue and in 1983 a proposal was made to rebuild the pier but to shorten the structure by 60 metres.

Jack Pompei, the local boat builder lead a successful campaign against the proposal and funds were raised to revamp the pier. The pier was revamped in 2009.  The pier is 174 metres long.

Today, Mordialloc Pier is a popular fishing spot, it provides temporary berthing and makes an enjoyable stroll with panoramic views.
