Geocache Description:

This Virtual Cache is located at the site of the former French Village Train Station.

The following information and picture is from 'Halifax & South Western Railway Digital Preservation Initiative - Wiki'. French Village Station - HSWwiki (hswdpi.ca)

The station at French Village was built circa 1901, is a Canadian Northern Class 3 style station, the most common type of station on the Halifax and South Western Railway.[1] Located in the community of Tantallon, the H&SW chose the name of French Village for the station using an older name for the area that included the villages of Tantallon, Glen Haven and French Village. In 1976, its CN Express office was closed[2] The station was sold about in the 1980s and became a residence, then a craft shop about 1990, then a residence again.[3] Rail service was abandoned in 1993. Today the station operates today as ... Cafe and Bicycle rental shop. Attached to the station is retired Canadian National Caboose 79234, now serving as the bicycle rental shop.

The train tracks have been converted to the "Rails to Trails" and is a multi-use (walkers, joggers, cyclists, horseback riders and ATV's) recreational trail. The trail is open year-round and can also be enjoyed during the winter on cross country skis or snowshoes. The trail is a crusher dust pathway and is also accessible to most strollers and wheelchairs. The section of the trail that goes by the former French Village Train Station is called the St. Margaret’s Bay Area Rails to Trails.

The St. Margaret’s Bay Area trail is 33km, connects to the BLT Trail in Hubley and the Aspotogan Trail in Hubbards, and makes up a section of the Rum Runners Trail, a system of seven connecting trails from Halifax to Lunenburg, spanning nearly 120 kilometres. The St. Margaret’s Bay Area trail has stunning elevated panoramic views of St. Margaret’s Bay.

This location can be very busy in the summer and weekends with many people biking out from Halifax for coffee, food and ice cream.

Please note that parking at the former French Village Train Station can often be full, and has a time limit of 2 hours. Refer to the waypoints for other parking options.
