1739 metais buvusio Stara Būdos kaimo vietoje grafai Markas Antonijus ir Pranciška Butleriai įkūrė Storopolės miestą. Grafienė buvo tikinti moteris, todėl 1750 metais ji pakvietė marijonų vienuolius pastatyti šalia miestelio medinę bažnyčią ir vienuolyną. Žmonės pasakoja gražią legendą, kaip grafienė Pranciška rinko vietą bažnyčiai. Ji pėsčia išėjo iš Kvietiškio dvaro ir eidama kalbėjo rožinį. Kur ji pabaigusi dešimtį „Sveika Marija“ ir kalbėjo „Tėve mūsų“, ten jos palydovai pasodindavo po liepą. Grafienė rožinį pabaigė kalbėti netoli Šešupės ir pabaigusi tarė: „Čia bus bažnyčia“. Netrukus toje vietoje iškilo graži medinė bažnyčia ir vienuolynas, o kelią, kuriuo ėjo grafienė rinkdama vietą bažnyčiai, praminė rožančkeliu. Marijonai liko čia gyventi. Netrukus jų gyvenamoji vietą išaugo į bažnytkaimį, pavadintą Marijampolės vardu. Pavadinimas kilo nuo Marijonų vienuolių pavadinimo ir grafų Butlerių gyvenamosios vietos Staropolės pavadinimo.
Napoleono bato kulnas vienuolyno kiemelyje atsirado minint 1812 metais nutikusį įvykį, kai Napoleonas Bonapartas lankėsi mūsų mieste. Pasakojama, kad bėgdamas nuo maskvėnų Prancūzijos imperatorius stabtelėjo Marijampolėje užkąsti ir priimti svarbų sprendimą - kuria kryptimi keliauti link Paryžiaus.
