Pozdravljeni v Novem mestu, na Glavnem trgu. Gre za največji srednjeveški trg na Slovenskem trikotne oblike. Trikotno obliko mu dajejo pročelja hiš, ki so nanizane ob trgu. Po velikem potresu v 16.stoletju so bile deležne večkratne prenove. Nastale so značilne kamnite trgovsko-obrtniške hiše z obokanimi hodniki, ki so imele v pritličju poslovne prostore, v prvem nadstropju pa bivalne prostore. V 18.stoletju so obrt dopolnjevali s krčmarstvom, zato je bila večina arkad zazidanih.

Stavbe so bile praviloma poimenovane po lastnikih. Tako trg v najširšem delu zaključuje mogočna dvonadstropna Bergmanova hiša, v kateri je od srede 19.stoletja delovala Bergmanova lekarna. V prvem nadstropju je med drugim živela tudi Angela Smola, neuslišana ljubezen slovenskega pesnika Dragotina Ketteja. Ta je Novo mesto in Glavni trg ovekovečil v pesmi Na trgu:

V zgornjem delu trga je namreč od 1861 stal litoželezni vodnjak, narejen v dvorski železarni. Kette mestni vodnjak ni ovekovečil le v verzih, ampak se je poigral tudi z obliko kitic, ki ponazarjajo silhueto vodnjaka (carmen figuratum). Vodnjak so 1903 ob gradnji mestnega vodovoda zaradi pomanjkanja denarja prodali v Avstrijo. Ob prenovi trga leta 1955, je arhitekt Marjan Mušič na isto mesto postavil kamniti vodnjak s Kettejevimi verzi in obnovil arkade.
Nasproti vodnjaka, kjer je danes slaščičarna, je Germova hiša, last znanega novomeškega medičarja in lectarja. V njej se je rodila in živela slovenka pisateljica Ilka Vašte.
Na Glavnem trgu stoji tudi rotovž ali mestna hiša. Ustno izročilo pravi, da so bile letine vina v času gradnje še posebej kisle. Ker vino ni šlo v prodajo, so ga porabili pri gradnji namesto vode. Na pročelju je upodobljen ustanovitelj Novega mesta, Rudolf IV. Habsburški, ki je mesto poimenoval Rodolfswerth in mu leta 1365 podelil mestne pravice. Nekdaj so trg zapirala Karlovška vrata, ki so bila poleg Ljubljanskih vrat edini vhod v mesto. 1898 so vhod v mesto preuredili, podrli leseni most in zgradili novi litoželezni kandijski most, ki še dandanes služi svojemu namenu. Ob zadnji prenovi mostu in Glavnega trga sta bila most in Glavni trg urejena kot cona zaprta za promet.

Glavni trg je bil vedno vpet v življenje Novomeščanov. Tu so prirejali sejme, tržne dneve, parade mestne godbe, nastope novomeških sokolov, med katerimi je bil tudi Leon Štukelj, sprejeme športnikov, družabne in športne prirditve. Od osamsvojitve Slovenije je Glavni trg vsako leto prizorišče novomeškega teka in zaključne etape kolesarske dike po Sloveniji.

Welcome in Novo mesto. Glavni trg or Main square is the largest medieval triangular square in Slovenia. Its triangular shape is formed by the buildings after the earthquake renovation in 16th century. Typical stone merchant-craftsmen houses were built. There were workshops with arched corridors on the ground floor. On the first floor there were living spaces of the owner, and lofts in the second floor for workers or maids. In the 18th century the trade was in decline so the owners supplemented the trade with inns and taverns. Most of the arcades were built over.

Buildings were generally named after their owners. The most remarkable building was built by Bergmann, who established first pharmacy in the city in the middle of the 19th century. At the ned of 19th century there was a home of Angela Smola, the unrequited love of Slovenian poet Dragotin Kette. He fell in love with her, wrote her a letter and dedicated his love poems to her. The most known poem Na trgu describes the Main square, the fountain in front of Angela's home and his love for her. Kette not only immortalized the city fountain in verse, but also played with the form of stanzas that illustrate the silhouette of the fountain (carmen figuratum). The fountain was sold to Austria in 1903 due to lack of money for city water supply system construction. In 1955 the architect Marjan Mušič placed a stone fountain with Kette's verses in the same spot and decided to restore the arcades.
There is also town hall or rotovž on the Main square. At the time of construction, the wine harvest was bad and the wine was particularly dry. There was low profit so instead of water the wine was used for the construction of the town hall. Rotovž is the only building with balcony and city coat-of-arms (Rudolf IV of Habsburg, who granted the city rights in 1365). In the past, the square was closed by the city gate and the only wooden bridge over river Krka. In 1898, the wooden bridge was torn down and a new cast-iron Kandija bridge was built. It still serves its purpose today. During the last renovation of the bridge and the Main square were closed to traffic.

The Main square has always been involved in the life of the residents of Novo mesto. Fairs, market days, performances and athletes' receptions, social and sport events were usually held here. Since the independence of Slovenia, the Main square has been the venue of the Novo Mesto running festival Novomeški tek and the final stage of the cycling race Tour of Slovenia.
