Geocache Description:

ALL LOGS WITHOUT ANSWERS SENT TO ME AND WITHOUT SUBMITTING  A PHOTO WITH YOUR LOG VERIFYING YOU WERE THERE, WILL BE DELETED.

This is a virtual cache near the St. Augustine Visitor Center.   It has no logbook or container.

The Zero Milestone of the Old Spanish Trail (OST)  is a 6' sphere made of coquina shells.  The milestone marks the end of the old Spanish Trail continuous auto highway that linked San Diego, California and St. Augustine, Florida.  The trail was the first transcontinental route from ocean to ocean, llinking  together the southwestern and southern states.

Planning and construction of the highway system began in 1915 in San Diego and finished in 1929 in St. Augustine.  It was officially opened for travel that year. The marker was created by the local Exchange Club, and has moved three times and is now alongside the visitor's center, where US Route 1 meets State  Road A1A.  It became the road less traveled in the 1960s, with the advent of Interstates 8 and 10 that provided a faster route.  Many sections of the trail became deserted.

The highway's name, the Old Spanish Trail, also pays homage to the Spanish heritage and missions of the south and southwest.  The OST follows what eventually became known as U.S. Highway 80 in the southwest and U.S. Highway 90 in the south.
