Geocache Description:

Welcome to Watchegatchea/Dimboola

This was home to the Wotjobaluk people who had named the place Watchegatchea meaning 'Wattle tree and White Cockatoos' (we can vouch for the latter waking us up most mornings lol). Speaking to a local, she recalled growing up with the traditional owners who lived in humpies on what is now known as Dimboola Common. She told us of them mining salt from Pink Lake and how welcoming they were of her.

Nine Creeks started as a group of sheep stations all of which were approximately 100, 000 acres in size. As the population grew, as did their needs and 1859 saw the first general store open and the first mail service arrived in 1865. Nine Creeks became Dimboola in 1867, named by a surveyor after Dimboola in Ceylon.

Dimboola's population was around 1,400 people in 2016 (2021 results will be interesting). Near gz you will see the new library and playground. On the south west side of the building you will find public toilets and picnic tables. Please enjoy the mural that acknowledges the traditional owners and the two name changes. Painted in 2019 by Travis Price with the help of Hindmarsh shire youth councillors, Dimboola teachers and students and other local artists. To log a find, please turn around and look at the Welcome to Dimboola sign and message or email me the number of photos that are on the left hand side of the sign.

Feel free to enjoy the local area and post any photos (EXCEPT of the Welcome to Dimboola sign). Bonus points to anyone who has seen the play 'Dimboola' smiley
