Geocache Description:

This virtual cash is located in my hometown of Ellis, Kansas--Home of the Railroaders!!!

In 1867, the Kansas Pacific Railway built a water station at the site of present day Ellis, Kansas.  In 1870, a post office was established and by 1873, the site had a depot, hotel and a few shops.  Settlers from Syracuse, New York and Louisville, Kentucky began arriving in Ellis to work for the railroad.  Ellis began, as many others in this area, as a cowtown and shipping point for cattle herded from the south.  In 1886, the Bukovina Germans began settling here and Ellis became incorporated in 1888.  Around this time, it is said that Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill Cody frequented the town.

The Ellis Railroad Museum has become a focal point for tourists in Ellis.  Just to the east, stand two buildings from the early railroad days.  The larger of the two was the "Roundhouse" that was capable of serving 14 locomotives.  Approximately 1/2 block west was the location of the original depot.

To log this cache, you'll need to visit the south side of the depot and Aerotrain shed on the property of the museum.  There you will find murals depicting Ellis and the Railroad.  There are two trains depicted.  One is an old steam engine, the other, a modern locomotive.  Each train has a number.  Please send me the number on each of the train engines.
