Geocache Description:

Cerne Abbas Giant

History

The Cerne Abbas Giant is one of the largest chalk figures in England, at 60m tall and 31m wide. The origins of the giant are unknown: he could be prehistoric, or maybe from the time of the English Civil War. No one is sure, although his first mention is in the 18th century. Locals claim that the Giant has been around longer than man can remember. One theory is that the Giant is a symbol for Hercules, created as a pagan idol. There is some evidence that the Giant may once have carried a cloak over the left arm and a severed head in his hand. There is evidence to In local folklore the Giant is considered a fertility symbol. The Giant is one of only two human chalk figures in England, the other being the Long Man of Wilmington in Sussex. There are 55 other chalk figures in England, including locally Osmington White Horse near Weymouth. The Giant has to be regularly cleaned by local volunteers to stay white. You are welcome to visit the Giant up close, but please don't walk on it.
