Poised is a majestic sculpture standing in the very centre of Aberdeen, in Marischal Square, just next to the magnificent Marischal College. Being of a notable size itself, the two-tonne steel leopard balances on a 10m tall column, which means you have to look up to see it! It was designed in 2017 by a Scottish sculptor, Andy Scott, who is also the one to have created the famous Kelpies in Falkirk. The statue is internally lit and gets a whole new light after dark.
You might ask, why a leopard?
This animal is a heraldic symbol of Aberdeen, with two of them supporting the city's coat of arms. Legend has it, two leopards were bestowed as a gift to the city by King James I after his long and ‘compulsory residence’ in England. After being held captive, Aberdeen underwrote the expenses he had incurred during captivity. The leopard has since become a symbol of the city.
