Locust Valley Cemetery is a non-denominational Long Island, NY cemetery that began with a unique plan over 100 years ago. Rather than the usual rows of marble and granite, the Cemetery's 19th century founders conceived of a sanctuary more like a woodland garden. To realize that vision, they commissioned the Olmsted family, renowned architects of Central Park, to design its grounds.
This is one of the most unique cemetaries I've visited, the roads are maze like and twisty. I would suggest parking and walking to the gravesites.
I did not see posted hours for the cemetary, I would suggest visiting during daylight.
Of the many famous and not so famous persons here, three notables are:
Franklin Nelson Doubleday in partnership with Samuel Sidney McClure founded the american publishing company Doubleday & McClure Company in 1897. The firm was later renamed Doubleday It published the work of mostly U.S. authors under a number of imprints and distributed them through its own stores.
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford nicknamed "the Chairman of the Board", was an American professional baseball pitcher who played his entire 16-year Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees. He was a 10-time All-Star and 6-time World Series champion. In 1961, he won both the Cy Young Award and World Series Most Valuable Player Award. Ford led the American League in wins three times and in earned run average twice. Ford was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
Rocky Graziano who's given name was Thomas Rocco Barbella was an American professional boxer and actor who held the World Middleweight title from 1947-1948. Graziano is considered one of the greatest knockout artists in boxing history, often displaying the capacity to take his opponent out with a single punch.
