This is one of our "Favorite Places" in Rockford! We had seasons tickets for several years. My favorite play is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I was able to see this production two times at Starlight and I will never forget that in one of the production's there was a camel that crossed this stage. I also enjoyed "Music Man" and learned about Meridith Willson and this play in Mason City, Iowa, solving the wonderful geoart, "Mr Toot."
One of the biggest moments in Starlight's history occurred on June 10, 2003, when the college held a roof-opening gala for the newly remodedled Bengt Sjostrom Theatre (Starlight Theatre). The 135,000 square foot architectural wonder was designed by the world-renowned architect, and Belvidere native, Jeanne Gang and her firm Studio Gang Architects. The design's most unique feature is its 200-foot, retractable star-shaped roof, which opens like the petals of a flower, allowing audiences to enjoy the night sky while still being protected from inclement weather. The project was three years in the making.
Starlight Theatre has been awarded one of Illinois' 150 Great Places by the American Institute of Architects, Illinois Council. This prestigious award is given to places that have been identified by leading architects as contributing to their communities quality of life.
