Geocache Description:

"Wheels up" is a colloquial term used to describe an aeroplane taking off.  I have travelled internationally and domestically quite a lot for work and so am very familar with airports, Sydney airport (SYD) in particular.  So I wanted to share a little of my experience with the geocaching community through this cache.

The posted coordinates are a great spot for plane spotting. There is a large parking area, a small dog friendly beach and a great view of planes landing and taking off from 16R/34L - the main runway.  Planes taking off from the second runway (16L/34R) can also be seen clearly and regularly.  Access to GZ is via General Holmes Drive (from the south) and is between 6am and 7pm, so time your visit carefully.

In order to claim this virtual, you must complete two tasks.

1. Take a photo of yourself (or something that identifies you) at GZ with a plane in the air behind you above either of the runways with at least one wheel visible and in the air. This photo is to be attached to your log.

  • You may need to wait around for a bit (or plan well) to get a clear photo that meets this requirement, hence the difficulty.
  • It is likely going to easier to take a clear photo of a plane taking off rather than landing.
  • A photo of a plane taxiing along the runway is not sufficient.
  • An example photo is included in the photo gallery.

2. Message me the grate number at GZ to prove you have been at GZ (ie the 9 letters/digits/symbols under your feet). Do not include this number in your log.

You are welcome to log your find before you send the required information to me, but please send the information to me within a week of logging. Logs which do not meet the photo requirements, or where the required information has not been sent, will unfortuately be deleted. Armchair logging is not acceptable.

I hope you enjoy visting this interesting location, the plane spotting and this cache!
