Geocache Description:

Welcome to Kangaroo Valley and the historic "Hampden Bridge".

Please note that there is roadside parking to the North and an offroad carpark to the South of the bridge providing easy and safe access.

Hampden Bridge is the only surviving suspension bridge from the colonial period of New South Wales and was an outstanding engineering achievement for its time. Designed by Ernest De Burgh and spanning 77 metres the bridge was opened on 19th May 1898, replacing the 2-span timber truss bridge of 1879.

To claim this Virtual cache I ask that you perform a few simple tasks.

1. Take a photo of the bridge and include in your log with either yourself or an identifying item (eg. name on paper or pathtag) in the foreground. Either Northern or Southern end, or both if you so wish.

2. Message me with answers to the five following questions. All answers can be found in the near vicinity of the bridge and do not require leaving the footpath or bridge pedestrian crossing.

A: Find a nearby information sign (WP1). What was the cost of the bridge in pounds?

B: What is the prohibited bridge activity listed on the sign? (WP2)

C: How many black cross braces are there on one side of the bridge?

D: What animal is depicted on the footpath to the South of the bridge? (WP1)

E: What animal is depicted on the footpath to the North of the bridge? (WP2)

Please feel free to include any additional photos in your log as long as they don't give away any of the answers required to claim the find. Please note that any offending logs will be deleted. Sorry.

I hope you enjoy this Virtual and your visit to Kangaroo Valley. Please take the time to explore the area and the town and where possible support some local businesses.

I also recommend visiting these other Virtuals while in the area. GC9P7R4 - Red Rocks Trig Lookout and GC9P7BB - Cambewarra Lookout.
