Første telefonapparat

“Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you”, sa Alexander Graham Bell når han ringte sin assistent 10. mars 1876.

Alexander Graham Bell viser frem telefonen

Anderssen hadde hus i Skaret, der Skaregata no krysser Storgata. Og han fikk montert disse to apperatene mellom Anderssens firma og hans private hjem i 1876 her i Ålesund.

“Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you", said Alexander Graham Bell when he called his assistant on 10 March 1876. Thus the first ever telephone conversation was completed.
In the same year, Bell took out a patent for the technology and is known to many as the inventor of the electric telephone. This made Alexander Graham Bell a famous and wealthy man, but was he really the one who invented the telephone?

First telephone set
In 2002, Antonio Meucci (1808–89) was awarded the honor of inventing the telephone by the House of Representatives in the United States. He worked in a theater in Florence, Italy as a stage technician and there constructed a primitive tube phone so that the technicians could communicate. By 1849, Meucci had perfected the technique and was sending his own voice through a copper wire from one room to another in his home in Cuba. Meucci moved to New York, and in the years leading up to 1862 he developed at least 30 different prototypes of his so-called teletrophono.

But Meucci was too poor to apply for a patent for his invention. In 1870, as Meucci was ready to demonstrate his telephone in public, he was badly burned in a fire on board a ferry where he was a passenger. To get money for medicines, his prototypes were sold. In 1876, to his surprise, he read that Alexander Graham Bell was credited with inventing the telephone.

Alexander Graham Bell shows off the telephone

The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first official World's Fair to be held in the United States, was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 10 to November 10, 1876, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Officially named the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine.

And at this exhibition Ålesund had also sent a representative, namely Joakim Anderssen was strongly involved politically, and was visiting the world exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 as a jury member in the fisheries section, and here he came into contact with Alexander Graham Bell, who at the exhibition presented the telephone for the first time time.
This ended up with Anderssen buying two devices which he sent home to Ålesund. Anderssen had a house in Skaret, where Skaregata now crosses Storgata. And he had these two devices installed between Anderssen's company and his private home in 1876 here in Ålesund. The first conversation took place between father and son. The historic conversation took place four years before the telephone officially arrived in Norway.
