*********************************************

Officially completed in 1912, the Grand Forks provincial courthouse was designed by architects R.F. Lawrence and Robert McIntosh. The building site was purchased for $3500 and the contract for construction was awarded to Robert Gaw, a local who had submitted the low bid of $44,037 (well over $1 million today). The architectural specifications for the building relied heavily on local materials. All lumber was to be procured locally. The iron fence surrounding the building was fabricated by local blacksmith Mr. Mooybauer. All of the exterior brick was manufactured in BC. It’s uncertain whether the white marble stone trim was purchased from a quarry in Grand Forks, or imported from eastern Canada or United States. Job books from the day in the local Archives do not specify.

Thanks to new technology in the development of electrical air circulation systems, the building was the first of its kind to have the court room located in the middle of the upper floor. This was a highly desirable feature as it eliminated external noise during proceedings.

The public area of the courthouse was lit by several windows on the upper floor, along with the beautiful stained glass windows that are still in place on either side of the main entrance. The creator of the stained glass was A.F.  Roy, dated 1912. The coffered ceiling and dentilled cornice are well crafted and classic architecture of the era.

In 1981 the building along with the countless court documents were damaged by a fire. Repairs were combined with restoration and upgrades, and were completed in 1983 at a cost of $1.2 million. Construction of the rear extension of the building, which contains the elevator, was sympathetic to the original design. In 2001 the Circuit Court was relocated and the city of Grand Forks bought the building from the BC Housing Authority. A decision was made in 2007 to transform the courthouse into the new home for the Art Gallery (Gallery 2), Heritage Centre, and Visitor Centre. Extensive renovations were completed in October 2008 and the building is now open to the public.
