Tahunanui beach is a Nelson Icon. It is also changing quickly. Many of the Earthcaches placed at Tahunanui highlight the changes happening here in more detail. The virtual cache takes you to the east end of Tahunanui, where you will photograph and assess the changes to the beach through the citizen science project CoastSnap.
CoastSnap is a global citizen science project to capture our changing coastlines. Nelson City Council has partnered with CoastSnap to install a specially designed phone cradle at five coastal locations in Nelson (Monaco, Tahunanui, Kinzett Terrace, the Boulder Bank, and Cable Bay). The cradle ensures all the images taken are from exactly the same vantage point. Therefore, an accurate photo record can be created to show how the beach changes over time. This includes shoreline changes, sea level rise and storm effects.
You do not need to message/email me to log this Virtual cache. Please just add the following to your log:
- A photo looking through the CoastSnap station. If your phone/camera cannot fit inside the cradle, just let me know in your log.
- Mention some of the changes you have seen at the beach (from the recent or distant past). If you are unfamiliar with the beach, compare your photo to to others on CoastSnap. Zoom in on Tahunanui from the link here Map - CoastSnap- Citizen Science App
You do not need to upload a photo to CoastSnap.
To take a good photo, make sure the image is:
- Landscape
- Unedited

While many caches types have been placed here, this is the first virtual. I am grateful to add to many of the great caches along Tahunanui Beach.
