Geocache Description:

Lenham Cross

Lenham Cross © Susan Featherstone (WMR-16335)

The Lenham Cross is a grade II listed war memorial. It was initially created in 1921 by cutting into the chalk hillside as a memorial to local fallen soldiers in the first world war. It was unveiled in 1922. An extra 40 tons of chalk was added to it during renovations in 1983.

The dedicatory stone which was at the foot of the cross was moved to Lenham church in 1977 - it bears the names of the men from the parish who died in both the first and second world wars. The stone was moved there so that the surviving relatives of those named on it could still visit, since they were getting too old to climb the hill.

The cross can be found less than half a mile's walk from the suggested parking area. You could also park on the opposite side of the A20, but the road can be extremely busy.

Just before you reach the cross, you will see a fenced area enclosing several steps and a bench. There is also a sandstone milestone nearby.

LOGGING TASK: Please answer the following two questions, and send the answers via Message Centre, or an email via my profile page:

1. What date is shown several times on the bench

2. What date was the nearby Milestone placed.

Since this is a virtual cache, the answers are required to confirm that you visited the location. Please do not post the answers to the questions in your log, but please do post pics taken at the location.

Thank you for visiting this unusual War Memorial.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Just-Us-Two know first at justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
