Die Autobahnkirche Adelsried ist in Deutschland die älteste Autobahnkirche. Sie wurde am 12. Oktober 1958 eingeweiht. Der Augsburger Papierfabrikant Georg Haindl stiftete die Kirche, um die Reisenden an Gott zu erinnern. Ihren Namen "Maria, Schutz der Reisenden" verdankt sie einer Überlieferung aus dem Matthäusevangelium 2, 19-23: Jesus, Maria und Josef kehren nach langer, beschwerlicher Reise aus Ägypten in ihre Heimat zurück. Durch alle Gefährdung und Unsicherheit hat Gott sie dabei begleitet und sicher an ihr Ziel geführt.
Der Architekt Diplom-Ingenieur Raimund Freiherr von Doblhoff hat sich 1958 die erste Autobahnkirche des Landes als "Hafen vertrauter Stille" vorgestellt: "Zu Füßen des Heilands am Kreuze fahren in der Ferne die Autos." Der rechteckige Grundriss der Kirche, 17 Meter lang und 14 Meter breit, entspricht im Maßstab exakt dem einer typisch bayerischen Dorfkirche. Die Architektur verbindet traditionelle und neue Elemente. Die Vorder- und Rückwände der Kirche bestehen fast nur aus Glas und wirken sehr licht und offen. Das breite Dach, eine Betonskelett-Konstruktion, vermittelt Geborgenheit und Schutz. Die einfache Bauweise lässt viel Raum und konzentriert sich auf das Wesentliche: das große Hängekreuz, den Tabernakel und den durch einen breiten Treppensockel erhöhten Altarbereich. Die Eingangsfront besteht weitgehend aus einer zweiteiligen Glasschiebetür, die sehr einladend wirkt und bei gut besuchten Gottesdiensten im Sommer weit geöffnet werden kann.
Das Kreuzbild über dem Altar zeigt den Gekreuzigten in einer Schlichtheit, die sich gut in die Einfachheit der gesamten Kirche einpasst. Gleichzeitig fällt es jedem Besucher unmittelbar ins Auge und überragt den Raum. Vor dem Tabernakel bezeugen die Opferlichter die Zwiesprache der Reisenden mit Gott.
In einer Nische der Außenwand weist eine kleine Skulptur der reisenden Heiligen Familie auf die Geschichte von "Maria, Schutz der Reisenden" hin.
Barrierefreiheit
Der Weg zur Kirche ist leicht ansteigend. Rollstuhlfahrer und Gehbehinderte gelangen jedoch über ebenerdige Eingänge problemlos in die Kirche.

The Adelsried motorway church is the oldest motorway church in Germany. It was consecrated on 12 October 1958. The Augsburg paper manufacturer Georg Haindl donated the church to remind travellers of God. It owes its name "Mary, Protection of Travellers" to a tradition from the Gospel of Matthew 2:19-23: Jesus, Mary and Joseph return to their homeland after a long, arduous journey from Egypt. Through all the danger and uncertainty, God accompanied them and led them safely to their destination.
In 1958, architect Raimund Freiherr von Doblhoff envisioned the country's first motorway church as a "haven of familiar silence": "At the feet of the Saviour on the cross, cars drive in the distance." The rectangular floor plan of the church, 17 metres long and 14 metres wide, is exactly the same scale as a typical Bavarian village church. The architecture combines traditional and new elements. The front and rear walls of the church are made almost entirely of glass and appear very light and open. The wide roof, a concrete skeleton construction, conveys security and protection. The simple construction leaves a lot of space and concentrates on the essentials: the large hanging cross, the tabernacle and the altar area raised by a wide staircase base. The entrance front consists largely of a two-part sliding glass door, which is very inviting and can be opened wide during well-attended services in summer.
The image of the cross above the altar shows the crucified in a simplicity that fits in well with the simplicity of the entire church. At the same time, it immediately catches the eye of every visitor and towers over the room. In front of the tabernacle, the sacrificial lanterns testify to the travellers' communion with God.
In a niche of the outer wall, a small sculpture of the travelling Holy Family refers to the story of "Mary, Protection of Travellers".
Accessibility
The path to the church is slightly uphill. However, wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties can easily enter the church via ground-level entrances.
