Geocache Description:

Blackpool Tower

Blackpool Tower is an iconic tourist attraction in Blackpool which was opened to the public on 14th May 1894. At the time of opening the Tower was the tallest man made structure in the then British Empire, it is 518 feet (158 metres) tall

Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the Tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and Roof Gardens, this was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973

Who Built The Blackpool Tower

The Tower architects were Manchester’s James Maxwell and Charles Tuke. It was James Cardwell and Sons of Blackpool who laid the brickwork for the buildings. Unfortunately, neither Maxwell nor Tuke lived to see the Tower finished

The company of Heenan and Froude constructed the Tower itself. They also made the first electric crane in the world which was used on the Tower construction in 1893

Nori stone, imported from nearby Rossendale, is used in the foundations of Blackpool Tower. This stone is so hard it’s also in the foundations of the Empire State Building in New York

The Tower complex contains over 5 million bricks and 2,200 tons of steel

Completion of the actual Tower itself was marked when the flagpole was lifted into position in December 1893. However, the buildings weren’t finished until the following year
