Geocache Description:

Is it a fish? An egg? A spaceship? This sculpture goes by many names, but is most commonly known as the Textor Ball, while officially it is called the Textor Disc. It sits on top of the roof of Textor Hall and gives a great view of Cayuga Lake.

  • Optional Additional Requirement: If you want to have some fun you can also include an additional picture (you must include one of the above pictures as well) using the Ithaca College Webcam. Screenshot yourself when the webcam stops on the disc with the lake in the distance and upload with one of the other pictures. The webcam is on a continuous loop and stops on the disc every 30 seconds or so.

The disc is 10 feet in diameter by 6 feet through the center and is largely made of steel and fiberglass. It is mounted in the center of a 2' high octagonal stone wall filled with small stones. The disc itself features six matching concave areas on each side.  It was fabricated at the Cornell Foundry by Jack Squier and installed on top of the Textor Hall in 1967 in preparation for Ithaca College’s 75th Anniversary celebrations. According to the artist “We made a steel frame, which was embedded in styrofoam. The piece was carved in foam and then laminated over the foam core with polyester resin and fiberglass. Finally, that was all smoothed out and covered in aluminum leaf.” Squier said the hypotheses and folklore surrounding the sculpture on Ithaca’s campus have amused him. Dispelling some of the lingering myths, he said the sculpture is an abstract piece. “It’s an abstraction based on a series I did called ‘Heads,’” he said. “This was a big version of one of them. we decided to call it a Disc to keep it from sprouting mustaches.”
