Växjö domkyrka uppfördes under tidig medeltid och är idag stiftskyrka för Växjö Stift. Legenden säger att en ängel visade sig för missionären Sigfrid och uppmanade honom att låta bygga en kyrka på just den plats där Växjö domkyrka står än idag. Kyrkan har en över 1000-årig historia, och den har över tid förändrats bland annat på grund av ett antal bränder som har framtvingat ombyggnationer. Det troliga är att kyrkan uppfördes som en träkyrka på sin nuvarande plats. Det finns inga lämningar kvar, men mynt från tidig medeltid har hittats på platsen.

Omkring år 1170 bildades Växjö stift genom en utbrytning ur Linköpings stift, och det är först från denna period man har kunnat finna källor som omnämner Växjö (Wexio) socken. I samband med detta byggdes en stenkyrka, sannolikt runt den gamla träkyrkan. Ett kraftfullt torn manifesterade makt och dignitet, vilket var viktigt för det nybildade stiftet, och detta har varit ett kännetecken för kyrkan genom alla år.

Kyrkan har under åren förändrats och byggts till, många gånger på grund av bränder eller förödelser under som nordiska sjuårskriget 1563-1570. Bland annat raserades då tornet och dess spiror. 1740 skadades åter kyrkan, då av att blixten slog ned med närmast total förödelse som följd.

Nästan varje århundade har renoveringar gjorts på kyrkan. Mellan 1957-1960 gjordes en större yttre renovering då kyrkan fick sin röda putsfärg och sina två karaktäristiska tornspiror. Invändigt skedde en större renovering i början av 2000-talet då kyrkan fick sitt mest uppmärksammade föremål, ett altarskåp i glas som utformats av glaskonstnären Bertil Vallien. Skåpet består av tre delar, ett mittpart ioch två rörliga flygeldörrar.

Med sina två tornspiror och sin höjd på 63 meter är Växjö domkyrka ett av de mest kända landmärkena i staden.

Växjö Cathedral was built during the early Middle Ages and is today the diocesan church of Växjö Diocese. According to the legend, an angel appeared to the missionary Sigfrid and urged him to have a church built on the spot where Växjö Cathedral still stands today. The church has a history of over 1,000 years and it has changed over time, among other things, due to a fire that has forced reconstruction. It is likely that the church was built as a wooden church in its current location. No remains remain, but coins from the early Middle Ages have been found at the site.

Around the year 1170 Växjö Diocese was formed by a split from Linköping Diocese, and it is only from this period that sources have been found that mention Växjö (Wexio) parish. In connection with this, a stone church was built, probably around the old wooden church. A powerful tower manifested power and dignity, which was important to the newly formed diocese, and this has been a hallmark of the church throughout the years.

The church has been changed and rebuilt over the years, many times due to fires or devastation during the Nordic Seven Years' War 1563-1570. Among other things, the tower and its spiers were then demolished. Also in 1740 the church was damaged again when lightning struck with almost total devastation as a result.

Almost every century renovations have been made to the church. Between 1957-1960 a major exterior renovation was done when the church got its red plaster color and its two characteristic tower spiers. Inside, a major renovation took place in the early 2000s when the church received its most notable object, a glass altar cabinet designed by the glass artist Bertil Vallien. The cabinet consists of three parts, a middle part and two movable wing doors.

With its two spiers and its height of 63 meters, Växjö Cathedral is one of the most famous landmarks in the city.
