Monteriggioni rappresenta uno dei borghi fortificati più significativi del territorio senese, rimasto incredibilmente intatto.
Costruito dai Senesi tra il 1213 e il 1219 per scopi puramente difensivi, il suo fulcro è rappresentato dalla piazza principale, accessibile entrando attraverso la Porta Franca o Romea e sulla quale si affaccia la Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, realizzata insieme al castello in stile romanico e gotico.
La piazza aveva originariamente come nome Piazza Roma, ma in onore del sommo poeta, in occasione del settecentenario della sua morte, ha cambiato nome in Piazza Dante Alighieri.

Monteriggioni is one of the most significant fortified villages of the territory around Siena, which has remained incredibly intact.
Built by the Sienese people between 1213 and 1219 for purely defensive purposes, its fulcrum is represented by the main square, accessible by entering through the Porta Franca or Romea and overlooked by the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built together with the castle in Romanesque and Gothic style.
The square originally was named Piazza Roma, but in honor of the great poet Dante, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death, it changed its name to Piazza Dante Alighieri.
