Haukeliseter Fjellstue er DNT's største og mest besøkte DNT-hytte, de er åpne hver dag, hele året og den ligger sentralt på Haukelifjell, rett ved E134, 1000 meter over havet. På sørsiden ligger Ryfylke- og Setedalsheiene, på nordsiden finner vi Hardangervidda Nasjonalpark. Dermed er der enormt mange turmuligheter herfra!
Foruten overnatningsmulighetene her har de egen restaurant som serverer lokalmat og et eget bakeri.
Opprindelig var seteren en seter for gårdene i grenda Haukeli, litt lenger mot øst, hvor de bodde og dyrene beitet i sommersesongen.
Den første fjellstuen av "mer moderne standard" åpnet i 1874 med Knut Haukelidsæter som bestyrer, en stilling han hadde i 40 år. Da han flyttet inn med fruen, var seteren kun en liten stue med to rom og hverken vei eller telefon.
På begynnelsen av 1900-tallet kom postmennene to ganger i uken, enten på ski eller til fots, og møtes her fra øst og vest, byttet post, snudde og gikk tilbake i retningen de kom fra. På sommerstid når snøen var borte kom "skysskarene" med kjerre fra Røldal og Vågsli og byttet passasjerer og dro igjen. Folk kunne kjøpe mat og sove over her. Beitebruk var det her til godt ut i 1940-årene.

I 1963 tok Stavanger Turistforening over og i årene etter fikk Haukeliseter sin nåværende form og i 1967 ble vegen helårsåpen.
Fjellovergangen på E134 er den eldste vinteråpne vegforbinnelsen mellom Øst- og Vestlandet, den første vegen åpnet i 1886, etter 32 års annleggsarbeid og var for hest og kjerre. Første tunnell ble sprengt ut og åpnet i år 1900 og er en av Norges eldste tuneller - se også labben.
Dagens trasé åpnet i 1968 og går på forhøyninger og i tuneller for å avhjelpe snøutfordringene på vinterstid.

Haukeliseter Mountain Lodge is the largest and most visited lodge in the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). They are open 365 days a year and it is centrally placed at Haukelifjell, next to the E134, 1000 meters above the sea.
To the south you have the Ryfylke- and Setedalshaeths, to the north the Hardangervidda Nationalpark. This means that from here you have a huge arrary of possible trekking routes from here!
Besides the possibility to rent a bed here for a night or more, there is a wonderfull restaurant that serves local food and a bakery,
Originally this Mountain Lodge was a summer farm for the farms in the village of Haukeli, a little to the east from here.
The first mountain lodge "of more modern standard" opened in 1874 with Knut Haukelidsæter as the manager, a position he had for 40 years. When he moved in with his wife, the lodge was a small lodge - with a small livingroom, no road and no phone...
In the start of the 1900'hundreds the mailmen arrived twice a week, on foot or skiing, they met here coming from east and west, exchanged mail and went back. In the Summer when the snow was gone the transportmen arrived on their carts from Røldal and Vågsli, exchanged passengers and went back. People could also buy a meal or a bed for the night. Animals was grassing the fields here until the end of the 1940's.
In 1963 the Stavanger Trekking Association racquired and started to run the Mountain Lodge and in the years thereafter the Moiuntain Lodge got it's curret form and in the year 1967 the road was open the whole year for the first time.
The mountainpass at road E134 is the oldest winter open road connection between the east and west side of Norway. The first road opened in 1886 and the construction took 32 years and was for horse and cart. The first tunnel on the road was constructed and opened in the year 1900 and is one of the oldest road tunnels - check out the Adventure Lab!
The road of today opened in 1968 and runs on elevations and in tunnels to remedy the snow challenges in winter and the snowy conditions.
