鳥栖（とす）駅は、鹿児島本線と長崎本線の分岐点で、佐賀県の東の端にあります。鳥栖駅の開業は明治２２年、九州に初めて誕生した６つの駅の１つです。駅舎は木造平屋建てで、明治４４年、九州鉄道時代に完成した２代目です。ホームの屋根を支える柱には、まだ日本が独自に鉄道を建設する技術が無かったためにイギリスやドイツから運ばれてきたレールが再利用されています。明治時代から車両を支えてきたレールたちは、今、ホームで屋根を支えながら、鉄道建設と駅舎の歴史を語っています。
Tosu Station is the junction of the Kagoshima Main Line and the Nagasaki Main Line, and is located at the eastern end of Saga Prefecture. Tosu Station opened in 1889 and was one of the first six stations established in Kyushu. The station building is a one-story wooden structure, the second generation of which was completed in 1911 during the Kyushu Railway era. The pillars supporting the platform roof are reused rails brought from England and Germany, as Japan did not yet have the technology to build its own railroads. The rails that have supported the rolling stock since the Meiji era now support the roof on the platform and tell the history of railroad construction and station buildings.

鳥栖機関区には昭和10年代に配属され、昭和29年（1954）に廃車除籍されるまで構内作業用の入換機関車として運用されました。機関区・操車場などの大規模な旧国鉄業務機関が姿を消した今日、かつての鳥栖の繁栄の元となった「鉄道のまち」を想い起こさせる、市内に残された唯一の記念物ともいえます。また、230形機関車は全国で2両しか現存していない大変貴重な近代化産業遺産です。
It was assigned to the Tosu Engine Depot in the 1935's and operated as a shunting locomotive for yard work until 1954, when it was decommissioned and removed from the fleet. Today, with the disappearance of large scale former Japanese National Railways service facilities such as engine sections and yard, this locomotive is the only remaining memorial in the city that reminds us of the "railroad town" that once made Tosu prosperous. In addition, the 230 class locomotive is a very valuable modern industrial heritage, with only two surviving locomotives in Japan.
