Welcome to the historic Rio Vista House. The fountain you see is a replica of the original King George V foutain.
The origianl fountain is now situated in the center plantation of Deakin Avenue and Eight Street. You possibly passed it on your way to this location. So why are there two identifical fountains in such close proximity you ask?
The original fountain was erected by Mr & Mrs W.B Chaffey in the late 1890s at this location, their family home, the hsitoric Rio Vista House.
After the tragic drowning of their one year old son, Edward Chaffey, in May of 1897 the fountain was turned off and sat idle.
In 1936, to commemorate the 25th anniversay of the coronation of King George V, Mrs W.B Chaffey gifted the fountain to the city of Mildura. The fountain was then relocated in 1938 to its current location in Deakin Avenue using funds donated by Mrs W.B Chaffey and the citizens of Mildura.
In 1991, to celebrate the centenary of Rio Vista house, the Mildura Shire had this replica fountain forged in Bendigo, Victoria, and erected here in the location of the original fountain.
In 2020 restoration works were carried out on the replica fountain, repainting it in a colour scheme thought to closely match that of which the original fountain would have historically been. Similar restoration works were carried out on the original fountain in Deakin Ave in 2022 returning it to its historial glory.
