Geocache Description:

The history behind Gearing's Point is that it was used as a lookout for fishermen who were coming into the historic Old Harbour. It also gave a fantastic view for onlookers as they watched the boats come in, as well as to see what catch the fishermen produced from long days at sea.

Today Gearing's Point offers one of the best views for whale spotting and watching. During peak season, tourists flock to this location to try and catch a glimpse of these stunning creatures. The best time to see whales in Hermanus is June through December. The Southern Right whales can arrive as early as April in Hermanus and stay as late as January but that is not something to count on.

There is ample safe parking with a whale lookout point. Various creative sculptures are on display on the paths leading from this area. This area is in the heart of the Hermanus CBD and within walking distances to shops, restaurants and views. Two excellent Adventure Labs are also to be found in this area: Champagne Mile and A Hermanus Ramble

To log this cache take a photo of yourself, or something with your geocache username, with one of the artworks. Your photo must be uploaded with your log to verify your visit and to satisfy the logging requirement.
