Welcome to the Canyon of Heroes. The canyon is the space between the buildings from Battery Park up Broadway to City Hall Park. It is the trail of more than 200 ticket tape parades from 1886 to 2021. The last parade was held for healthcare professionals and essential workers on 7/7/21. Each parade is marked with a granite strip with the date and who was honored. The New York Yankees have had the most parades at 9. Olympic teams and athletes at 7. The New York Mets at 3. There are many more like the Centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president, Winston Churchill's visit to NYC, the successful Apollo 11 mission to the moon and honoring Pope John Paul ll. The plaque at the start of the canyon states "These granite panels commemorate the New York City tradition of ticker-tape parades up Broadway from the Battery to City Hall." Other nearby historical markers are Fort Amsterdam, National Museum of the American Indian, Bowling Green Fence and Battery Park & Castle Clinton.
Start at the posted coordinates where the first plaque is and go north about 20 ft, staying on the west side of Broadway and read the next plaque.
To claim this Virtual, send me a message with the name of who or what was honored. BONUS: Post a photo of your favorite ticket tape parade plaque-except this one of course! Your face is not required to be in the photo.
