The red and white Beachy Head lighthouse was built in 1902 under the direction of Sir Thomas Matthews who was the Engineer in Chief for Trinity House. Over 3000 tons of Cornish Granite was used in its construction and it stands 43 metres (141 feet) tall. It first used electricity in 1975 and became fully automated in 1983. It used to make a sound which was created by using explosives this was discontinued in 1976.
The granite construction of the Belle Tout lighthouse was started in 1829, designed by Thomas Stevenson it became operational in 1834 and was deactivated in 1902. The building was used in the filming of the 1986 mini series "The life and loves of a she devil" and in 1987 featured in the James Bond film "The Living Daylights". In 1999 a remarkable feat of engineering it was moved 17 metres due to coastal erosion
There is no need to get close to the edge of the cliffs to achieve this virtual, but be aware that it is there, especially if you have children or animals with you
