Breiddalen Valley Lookout
Introduction
In July-August 2022, we went on a 3-week road-trip to Norway in order to get away from France and to relax, especially in this period. We discovered along the roads many grandiose landscapes, each one more amazing than the other, revealing the splendour of this country only 2 hours by plane from our home. But we fell in love with the roads 15 and 63, and in particular this viewpoint on the Breiddalen valley from the edge of the Djupvatnet lake. This is how I came up with the idea of setting up a virtual cache there in order to make this magnificent panorama better known.
About the location
Breiddalen is a valley in Norway and has an elevation of 1,280 metres. The valley is crossed by route 15 and famous scenic road 63 where you can admire the glaciers on the imposing mountains.
In the direct vicinity of the cache you can see Lake Djupvatnet, perched at 1016 metres above sea level and having an area of 2 square kilometres.
The lake is part of the headwaters of the Otta river system which flows southeast into the lake Breiddalsvatnet and on into Oppland county.
Continuing on route 63 you will arrive at Geiranger and its beautiful fjord and pass the famous mountain Dalsnibba from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Geirangerfjorden.
Important information: For safety reasons, due to the heavy snow cover in this season, the road is likely to be closed in winter and spring. Please check if the road is accessible before using it.
Log conditions
In order to log this cache, you have to go to the small red wooden cottage that you see in the distance when you arrive at the car park (waypoint available). The walk is not long and not very difficult. Once you have reached the coordinates of the PZ, you should take a picture of yourself and/or your GPS with the chalet in the background. Your face does not need to be visible on the picture, you could also show your nickname on a piece of paper or on some other item if you don't want to show your face. You could be more original with your photo but make sure it meets the given criterias. You must add this photo to your log or it will be removed! Please do not try to enter the chalet.
But don't forget the most important thing, enjoy the exceptional panorama that is offered to you and visit the whole area from this beautiful viewpoint!
