The Walk of the World
De Nijmeegse Vierdaagse, officieel de Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen, is een vierdaags wandelevenement dat sinds 1909 ieder jaar wordt gehouden en start op de derde dinsdag van juli. De Nijmeegse Wandelvierdaagse is de oudste en meest bekende Vierdaagse in Nederland. Het is de grootste meerdaagse wandelprestatietocht ter wereld en staat inmiddels ook bekend als The Walk of the World. Elk jaar doen er deelnemers uit circa tachtig landen mee, onder wie een groot aantal militairen.
De Vierdaagse kent drie afstanden: 30, 40 en 50 kilometer. In de week dat de Vierdaagse Nijmegen wordt gehouden worden in de binnenstad van Nijmegen ook de Vierdaagsefeesten (voorheen Nijmeegse Zomerfeesten) gehouden. In de diverse doorkomstgemeenten van de Vierdaagse Nijmegen worden ook festiviteiten georganiseerd. Vele honderdduizenden supporters van de Vierdaagse zijn de hele Vierdaagseweek in de regio aanwezig.
Gebouw en terreinen van De Vereeniging aan het Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen zijn langjarig start- en finishplaats en onderkomen van de organisatie geweest. Inmiddels is dat verplaatst naar de nabijgelegen Wedren, waar met tijdelijke voorzieningen veel meer ruimte is gecreëerd ook in het aangrenzende Julianapark en op het Vierdaagseplein. Gestart wordt in afstandsblokken 's ochtends vanaf 4.00 uur; de uiterlijke finishtijd is de eerste drie dagen 17.00 en op vrijdag 18.00 uur. Militaire deelnemers starten en melden af op het militaire kamp Heumensoord.
Het evenement werd sinds 1928 traditioneel geopend met een vlaggenparade; sinds 1951 werd deze kleurrijke deelnemersontvangst in Stadion De Goffert in Nijmegen gehouden. In 2011 werd de vlaggenparade voor de laatste keer gehouden vanwege de teruglopende belangstelling. In 2016 keerde de vlaggenparade terug ter gelegenheid van de 100ste Vierdaagse – niet in het Goffertstadion, maar door de straten van Nijmegen.
De Vierdaagse kent iedere dag een andere route door het Gelderse, Brabantse of het Limburgse land, in de wijde omgeving van de stad Nijmegen. Tijdens elke wandeldag staat een andere plaats in de omgeving van Nijmegen centraal:
Dag 1: Dag van Elst
De eerste dag van de Vierdaagse gaat door de Betuwe, ten noorden van Nijmegen, via o.a. Elst en Arnhem. Hierbij lopen de wandelaars zowel in het begin als aan het eind van de dag over de Waalbrug.
Dag 2: Dag van Wijchen
Tijdens de tweede dag worden o.a. Wijchen en Beuningen bezocht. Deze plaatsen liggen ten westen van Nijmegen. Op deze dag vallen de meeste mensen uit (veelal de ongetrainden).
Dag 3: Dag van Groesbeek
De route loopt de derde dag ten zuiden van Nijmegen aan de oostzijde van de Maas. Via Mook en Milsbeek wordt de klim ingezet naar Groesbeek, via de Zevenheuvelenweg naar Berg en Dal en vandaar terug naar Nijmegen.
Dag 4: van Cuijk
Tijdens de route van de vierde en laatste dag van de Vierdaagse worden o.a. Overasselt, Grave, Heumen, Linden en Cuijk bezocht om Nijmegen ten slotte binnen komen over de St. Annastraat, welke voor de Vierdaagse is omgedoopt tot de Via Gladiola.

De cache
De coördinaten van deze virtual cache horen bij het Vierdaagsemonument (Vera Tummers, 1966) op de Wedren, de parkeerplaats die elk jaar fungeert als start- en finish van de Nijmeegse Vierdaagse.
Om de cache te mogen loggen, moeten er echter eerst 8 andere waypoints worden bezocht. Deze waypoints liggen allemaal op het traject van de Vierdaagse en kunnen dus tijdens het lopen van de Vierdaagse worden bezocht, ongeacht de te lopen afstand. Bij elk waypoint dient een foto te worden gemaakt met het betreffende kunstwerk/monument op de achtergrond. Indien je zelf niet herkenbaar in beeld wilt komen, mag je ook een foto maken van een Vierdaagsegerelateerd voorwerp (denk aan: Vierdaagsekruisje, wandelschoenen, souvenirs in de Vierdaagsekleuren, e.d.). Bij je log plaats je een foto van je Vierdaagsekruisje bij het Vierdaagsemonument op de Wedren en voeg je vervolgens de foto’s van de waypoints toe (tijdens het loggen met de app kun je maar 1 foto toevoegen, maar met de webversie meerdere). Leuke anekdotes over je Vierdaagse-ervaringen in je log worden erg gewaardeerd.
Hoewel deze cache vooral bedoeld is voor Vierdaagselopers, kan hij altijd en door iedereen worden bezocht. Ook dan dienen alle waypoints te worden bezocht en foto’s volgens dezelfde richtlijnen te worden gemaakt. Indien je alle waypoints binnen één dag bezoekt, reken dan op een totale afstand van ongeveer 60 km (3 uur met de auto). Indien je niet beschikt over een Vierdaagsekruisje, mag je bij de logfoto een creatief alternatief gebruiken (een getekende, geprinte, geknutselde of geleende medaille). Logs die niet voldoen aan de richtlijnen worden verwijderd.

The Walk of the World
The Nijmegen Four Days Marches, officially the International Four Days Distance Marches Nijmegen, is a four-day walking event that has been held every year since 1909 and starts on the third Tuesday of July. The Nijmegen Walking Four Days Marches is the oldest and most famous Four Days Marches in the Netherlands. It is the largest multi-day walking event in the world and is now also known as The Walk of the World. Each year, participants from approximately eighty countries participate, including a large number of military personnel.
The Four Days Marches has three distances: 30, 40 and 50 kilometers. In the week that the Nijmegen Four Days Marches is held, the Four Days Marches celebrations (formerly the Nijmegen Summer Festivities) are also held in the city center of Nijmegen. Festivities are also organized in the various passing municipalities of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. Many hundreds of thousands of supporters of the Four Days Marches are present in the region throughout the Four Days Marches week.
The building and grounds of De Vereeniging on Keizer Karelplein in Nijmegen have been the start and finish place and home of the organization for many years. This has since been moved to nearby Wedren, where temporary facilities have created much more space, including in the adjacent Juliana Park and on the Vierdaagseplein. The start is in distance blocks in the morning from 04:00; the latest finish time is 5:00 PM on the first three days and 6:00 PM on Friday. Military participants start and finish at the Heumensoord military camp.
The event has traditionally opened with a flag parade since 1928; this colorful reception of participants has been held in the De Goffert Stadium in Nijmegen since 1951. In 2011, the flag parade was held for the last time due to declining interest. In 2016, the flag parade returned on the occasion of the 100th Four Days Marches – not in the Goffert Stadium, but through the streets of Nijmegen.
The Four Days Marches has a different route every day through the provinces Gelderland, Brabant or Limburg, in the wider area of the city of Nijmegen. Each walking day focuses on a different place in the Nijmegen area:
Day 1: Day of Elst
The first day of the Four Days Marches goes through the Betuwe, north of Nijmegen, via Elst and Arnhem, among others. The walkers walk over the Waalbrug both at the beginning and at the end of the day.
Day 2: Day of Wijchen
During the second day, Wijchen and Beuningen will be visited. These places are located west of Nijmegen. On this day, most people drop out (mostly the untrained).
Day 3: Day of Groesbeek
On the third day, the route runs south of Nijmegen on the east side of the Maas. Via Mook and Milsbeek the climb is started to Groesbeek, via the Zevenheuvelenweg to Berg en Dal and from there back to Nijmegen.
Day 4: from Cuijk
During the route of the fourth and last day of the Four Days Marches, Overasselt, Grave, Heumen, Linden and Cuijk, among others, are visited to finally enter Nijmegen via the St. Annastraat, which has been renamed the Via Gladiola for the Four Days.

The cache
The coordinates of this virtual cache belong to the Four Days Marches Monument (Vera Tummers, 1966) on the Wedren, the parking lot that serves as the start and finish of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches every year.
In order to log the cache, however, 8 other waypoints must first be visited. These waypoints are all on the route of the Four Days Marches and can therefore be visited during the Four Days Marches, regardless of the distance to be walked. A photo must be taken at each waypoint with the relevant artwork/monument in the background. If you do not want to be recognizable in the picture, you may also take a photo of a Four Days Marches-related object (for example: Four Days Marches cross, walking shoes, souvenirs in the Four Days Marches colours, etc.). With your log you place a photo of your Four Days Marches Cross at the Four Days Marches Monument on the Wedren and then add the photos of the waypoints (during logging with the app you can only add 1 photo, but with the web version several). Nice anecdotes about your Four Days Marches experiences in your log are much appreciated.
Although this cache is mainly intended for Four Days Marches walkers, it can be visited anytime and by anyone. Even then, all waypoints must be visited and photos taken according to the same guidelines. If you visit all waypoints within one day, count on a total distance of about 60 km (3 hours by car). If you do not have a Four Days Marches Cross, you may use a creative alternative for the log photo (a drawn, printed, handcrafted or borrowed medal). Logs that do not meet the guidelines will be deleted.
