This virtual will take you to a piece of Australian cinema history, Craig’s hut.
Craig’s Hut is located on Clear Hills near Mt.Stirling in the Alpine National Park in Victoria Australia. The hut was built as a set for the movie The Man From Snowy River (1982) based on poems by Banjo Paterson. On 11 December 2006 the hut was severally damaged by a bush fire. In the following two year the hut was rebuilt by volunteers and was reopened to the public.
To get to Craig’s Hut turn left onto Mt Stirling Rd (gravel), just after the Mt Buller entry station at Mirimbah. After 9km you arrive at Telephone Box Junction, at the day visitor centre for Mt Stirling. In Winter, 2WD vehicles travelling to this point must carry snow chains. This is where the road closes and parking is available. When the road is open, take Circuit Rd to the left and follow it another 18kms where you will find an information stand and public toilet. At this point all 2WDs and AWD/4WDs with low clearance (at least 22cm) will need to park and you can follow the 1.7km walking track to the hut.
4WDs can follow Circuit Rd another 1km then turn right onto Clear Hills track. Another 2kms down the track you will find the campground on the left (camping inside the hut is not allowed), a further 200m you will come to the car park of the hut. The last 2km have several large humps and is steep and narrow in parts. Depending on the season and subsequent weather conditions the size and shape of the humps may be different.
The roads beyond Telephone Box Junction are closed from June to November, depending on snow. During this time you can snow shoe to the hut. For the most up to date information on conditions you can visit the information centre in Mansfield or contact 03 5777 6077.
While dogs are not allowed within the ski resort areas they are welcome at the hut. Don’t be put off by the sign at Mirimbah that says no dogs. They are okay to travel through the resort areas provided you don’t let them out.
