Geocache Description:

Om kirken/About the church

Dansk

Since the Middle Ages, various castles and palaces have been located on the islet on which Hørsholm Church is located - in the 13th century in private ownership and from 1382 in the ownership of the crown.

The most famous castle complex is Hirschholm Castle designed by the court architect Lauritz de Thurah (1706-59) and taken into use in 1739 under Christian VI and Queen Sofie Magdalene. The castle was a large three-winged baroque structure.

During Christian VII, the castle became especially in the summer of 1771 the setting for a flourishing court life around Queen Caroline Mathilde and the king's physician Johann Friedrich Struensee (1737-72). Their daughter Louise Augusta, who was born this summer, was baptized in the Castle Chapel.

After Struensee's fall and Caroline Mathilde's deportation to Celle in Germany, the castle fell into disrepair as the royal family no longer wanted to inhabit it. The castle chapel was allowed to be used by the town's few inhabitants, otherwise, the nearest church was Birkerød Church.

Frederik VI had bitter childhood memories from Hirschholm. Therefore, he sentenced the castle to demolition and decided that the materials should be used in connection with the reconstruction of Christiansborg Castle, which was burned in 1794.

When Hirschholm Castle was demolished in 1810-12, the south-eastern pavilion that housed the castle chapel was left standing for continued use by the congregation. In 1813 a needy renovation was carried out, which proved to be completely inadequate, and in 1816 approx. 20,000 "daler". For a major repair.

However, the main repair was never initiated, as C.F.Hansen announced that it is not worth repairing the church pavilion. He believes, "that if one used the building materials present in the pavilion and the interior ornament of the church; one would be able to build a small and suitable congregation for the congregation for the granted sum, the maintenance of which it could contest."

Christian Frederik Hansen was born on February 29, 1756, as the son of a poor shoemaker and admitted as a 10-year-old to the Academy of Fine Arts. Student of C.F.Harsdo1fj: 1784-1800 farmer in Altona, Holstein. Professor of Architecture from 1808. Director of the Academy of Fine Arts 1811-18, 1821-27, and 1830-33. He died in 1845.

C.F.Hansen prepared 3 proposals for a new church, all of which show buildings larger than the castle chapel. It was project m. 2- chosen by Frederik VI - which came to form the basis for the final project; a project which in plan and exterior is strongly influenced by the architect's work with Our Lady's Church in Copenhagen, but largely adapted to the State's strained finances.

Construction began in the autumn of 1820, and on September 21, 1823, Hørsholm Church could be consecrated.

Opgave/Task

1.

Remember to send the answers for steps 2-4 to me over Message Center, and don't put them in your log ;)

To log this cache you must:

1.

Attach a selfie, or a photo of your finger or something geocaching related, with the northside of the church in the background.

2. WP1

At WP1 you will find a sign which tells a little about Hirschholm castle and garden. In the middle of the sign there is also a plan of Hirschholm Slotshave, but when was the plan made?

3. WP2

At WP2 you will find another sign, which tells a bit about the history of the church and castle. What was previously called "Nordens Versailles"?

4. WP3

At WP3 you will find an obelisk that was raised back in 1932, but what/who was this obelisk built in memory of?

Logs that do not follow the criteria, will be deleted without warning.
