On the 5-3-2022 I did my 10,000th cache. I made it land on a mountain as I do for milestones. This occasion was Mnt Ruapehu on the virtual cache: Virtually Stunning GC7B9YR As you know, you pass by that virtual on your way here to this cache.
Along for the ride was rustynz. We had great plans over a few days to do the virtual, visit friends, go to Waiohine valley to get the old T-2 GC137 cache and stay a night at Totara Hut and generally have a great time caching.
We admired these Waitonga Falls from afar and thought this could be an ideal hide. On the map they looked very cool and up close they certainly are. So prior to this cache placement I decided to carry in a large ammo can courtesy of Aiden29 who gave it to me. Rusty helped carry it in too and I’m sure people were wondering why we were carrying such a big lunch box! So a spot was chosen a little way down stream away from where people view the falls, I really wanted it to be on this side of the stream, so it can get attention without necessarily getting your boots wet.
I tried to get good co-ordinates, but being in a valley with deep tree cover it was a bit of a mission. So a good hint is provided and some photos should get you here. Just follow the track down and along the stream, cache is just uphill a few meters from the track. Notice the triangles! Allow an hour to get here (from the parking co-ords) if you're a slow walker like me. Enjoy the falls and the cache!
