Geocache Description:

Nestled in the heart of the Presidio is the final resting place of thousands of military veterans and their families. The San Francisco National Cemetery was the first National Cemetery on the west coast. The Cemetery was established in 1884, but was chosen as a burial location even earlier, with its first known American burial taking place in 1854. Now, rows of more than 30,000 headstones can be seen along this 30-acre hillside, as well as stunning views of the Bay. While the Cemetery is no longer adding new interments, the site is open to the public.

The National Cemetery Overlook can be found just past the Cemetery's Southeast rock wall perimeter, at the very top of the hill. When you arrive, you'll find a few benches tucked into a dense forest of Monterey Cypress and Eucalyptus Trees. Take your time to explore this area, read the poem carved in the stone, and enjoy a moment of peaceful reflection.
