Channelling my inner SHot70 to find mildly interesting spots that seem farther away than they actually are.
Maybe you're satisfied with yet another parking lot LPC, but most of us diehard, old-timer (meaning way past our prime) geocachers dream of those epic geo-adventures where we might discover long-lost caverns, hair-raising traverses along sheer ledges on our way, and Tomb Raider-esque contraptions to solve before we claim our prize.
Well, sorry, this ain't that.
But at least it's not the aforementioned miserable LPC .
This little excursion up Big Tujunga Canyon takes you, as did my previous group, to a small-scale version of one of my all-time favorite finds, The Chamber of Secrets. While nowhere near as spine-tingling, it's nevertheless a pleasant diversion from the usual urban cache hide, and it's only a few minutes from civilization, so to speak. Although it's approachable from above or below, it's certainly easier from below—but who wants that?! Be a man—or a woman, I won't judge—and take the harder, more enjoyably fulfilling route. You'll feel better about yourself. You'll have to pass by the depressing signs of a civilation rotting from the core, but try to ignore it.
Cache is a little round tin, small enough that you'll need your own writing stick, but you're always prepared, right? You'll want to avoid this during and just after any significant precipitation, as that would add a star or two to the difficulty level.
Mind your step, watch out for the usual critters, and especially the ever-present urushiol delivery systems.
