What a dam nice view......
While a Dam Nice View can be attained by approaching from the trails on the south bank of the Appomattox River, it is highly recommended that you approach this cache from the trails on the north bank....otherwise known as the Radcliffe Appomattox River Conservation Area. The trail from the parking lot to the old dam is wide, flat, well groomed, and is even stroller/wheelchair accessible. The final section of the "trail" to access GZ, of course, is not.
For those geocachers with a bit of an adverturous spirit, enjoy the trek out to GZ and good luck retrieving the cache. The difficulty level is set at 1.5 because the container should be easy enough to spot once you see it :) The terrain rating is set at 4.5, which could be debated as "just right" or "a bit generous", and is set as such due to the varying dangers that the final approach to GZ offers: your balance, water, potentially slick rocks, spiders, muggles, poison ivy, thorns, ticks, and snakes. But otherwise, a dam nice time on the way to a dam nice view.
There was a previous cache at this very location which I searched twice for, but came up empty both times. I referred to that one as my favorite DNF. Soon after it was archived, I knew a replacement was needed. And because GZ is a such a cool place, I don't mind the excuse to return for maintenance :)
The previous cache also listed a link to the history of this area, which was once part of the Upper Appomattox Canal Navigation System. So if learning some intersting history is your thing, go for it.
Enjoy to your trek out to GZ. Good luck retrieving, signing and replacing the log. Proceed with caution. But enjoy.
FYI: Not advisable to attempt this cache when the water level is flowing greater than 1000 cfs. Check >>>HERE<< for water levels.
