In 2000 the owners of Northland Dive, Shane and Julia, purchased 100 acres of land including a stream and a cowshed. The cowshed became their base to dive in the Bay of Islands ...every single weekend. Eventually their obsession with diving became full-time. And so, Shane and Julia moved into the cowshed permanently.

Northland Dive were the instigators for putting the decommisioned naval frigate - HMNZS Canterbury in the Bay of Islands. At the 11th hour, after managing to connect to the internet on a tempremental dial-up connection, Shane submitted the tender application to sink the Canterbury. There was a lot of competition to win the tender. However, with strong support the Bay of Islands Canterbury Charitable Trust won the tender. A year later on the 3rd of Novemeber, 2007 the former HMNZS Canterbury was sunk in Deep Water Cove.
