Geocache Description:

THE WORDLE PHENOMENON

The free game was created by software engineer Josh Wardle of New York City, who made Wordle — a riff on his name — originally for his partner, Palak Shah, who is a fan of word games. Shah also helped with some of the development.

Initial interest was modest, but its popularity has skyrocketed in recent weeks, growing from 300,000 users around the middle of January to millions of players.

Unsurprisingly, its that massive audience that has brought Wordle into the New York Times' orbit. Announcing its acquisition of the game for a price "in the low seven figures", the publication says the purchase "reflects the growing importance of games, like crosswords and Spelling Bee, in the company's quest to increase digital subscriptions to 10 million by 2025."

The game has a small set of rules which are as follows:

  • You have 6 tries to guess the word.
  • Each guess must be a valid word (though not all words in the dictionary are included).
  • After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word.
    • Letters in Green are in the correct spot.

    • Letters in Yellow are in the incorrect spot.

    • Letters in Grey are not found in the solution.
