Geocache Description:

Dinner Plate Turtle

The Dinner Plate Turtle is endemic to the state of Western Australia in Australia.. Chelodina steindachneri, commonly known as the dinner-plate turtle or Steindachner's turtle, is a species of turtle in the family Chelidae. The species is the least known of the Australian turtles and also one of the smallest members of the long-necked turtles of the genus Chelodina. It is a member of the subgenus Chelodina making it closely related to the Chelodina longicollis group of species.

Dinner Plate Turtles aestivate in the ground during the dry periods and come to the surface after heavy rain. Like most freshwater turtles they forage on insects, small vertebrates and vegetation. They can be found in the ephemeral rivers, and are occasionally seen travelling overland, most probably from one water body to another. The preferred natural habitats of C. steindachneri are freshwater rivers and freshwater swamps.
