Prior to the arrival of the Erie Railroad in 1841, Monroe was a farming and mining community with little access to the larger world. The effect of the new rail line was immense. It allowed citizens to travel, brought in coal for furnaces, and provided farmers an outlet for their milk to NYC. New industries such as cheese manufacturing and ice blocks were developed for export. New hotels and boarding houses grew around the railroad. By the end of the 19th century, Monroe was a thriving community. Two smaller train stations would be replaced by a larger train station constructed in 1913.

Due to struggling finances, the Erie railroad would go through numerous corporate entities throughout the years until coming to an end in the 1980’s. The last regular train passed through Monroe in 1983, followed by the removal of the tracks in 1984. The tracks outlived the train station, which was destroyed by fire in 1977. Today the old rail line is the home of the popular Heritage Trail path. The cache will be found just off the path after a brief walk.
