Geocache Description:

Asaka Sosui is a major project that draws lake water from Lake Inawashiro in the Asaka wilderness of Koriyama, which has been a barren land with poor water use since ancient times. The excavation of Asaka Sosui began in 1897 and became Japan's first agricultural irrigation project under the direct control of the country.

After spending about three years, he invested a total of 850,000 labor force and a total cost of 407,000 yen (about 40 to 50 billion yen when converted to the current monetary value). Asaka Sosui, which extends 52km from the main canal and 78km from the diversion canal, has been completed, and a new paddy field of about 3,000ha has been created.

Asaka Sosui is used as a power supply source (the earliest hydroelectric power plant in Japan, "Numagami Hydroelectric Power Plant") in addition to agriculture, and has developed the silk reeling industry and has led to the subsequent expansion of chemical plants. We laid the foundation for Koriyama, which is called the "economic capital".
