The monument commemorates the 130 local men who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
A meeting of the Ithaca Town Council was held on the 6th June 1921 to decide upon the location of the war memorial. A total of £650 had been raised and the committee was prepared to receive designs for the structure. The committee met on the 22nd February 1922 to make final preparations for the unveiling ceremony by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan on the 25th February 1922.
