Geocache Description:

Slaughter Canyon Series #3

Slaughter Canyon was named for Fenton Mercer Slaughter (1826-1897), an American politician and businessman.

Slaughter’s adobe became the center of a small settlement called Rincon (now part of Chino). A post office was established in 1870, and by 1879 it had a general store, saloon, blacksmith shop, dairy, and the Vine Slope winery with a capacity of over 20,000 gallons. Rose bushes grown at the adobe were famous for hundreds of miles.

The Yorba-Slaughter Adobe still stands just across the 71 freeway from here and is well worth a visit. Although it is currently closed for renovation, there are two caches just outside the grounds – GC2NCPV and GC7HNT7.

This cache is not at the posted coordinates. It is a letterbox hybrid.

You will follow instructions from the posted coordinates to find it. Once you locate the cache, you'll find a stamp inside that you can use to stamp your personal letterbox log, if you have one (you will need to bring an ink pad).

GPS waypoints are also provided, for those who don't letterbox. If you're not letterboxing, you can simply sign and date the cache log.

From the posted coordinates:

  • Follow the logical path until you reach a crossroads [WP1], about 0.17 miles from the starting coords.
  • Take the less-traveled path to the right.
  • Follow the path uphill until you come to an old gate [WP2] at the top. If you pass a tall, manmade structure, you've gone too far.
  • Starting at the right end of the gate, count 3 fence posts to the right. (If the fence is gone, walk about 12 paces right.)

At the final, you're looking for a brown and tan 1/2 gallon thermos. There’s room for small swag and trackables, but please no food/smellables or advertisements. Do not take the stamp! It is not swag - it must remain with the cache. If you're not using your own letterbox stamp and don't have a pen, post a pic of the log (without spoilers of the cache itself). Online log entries without a corresponding stamp or signature in the logbook may be deleted.

As always in wild areas, look before you step or reach to avoid critters and poisonous plants.

First to find honors and a golden dollar go to Beauzarian and Larry the pool guy!
