The Series

The Athens Awesome Athletic Multi Adventure series is a group of 12, 2-stage multicaches set up to highlight sports in Athens.  Of course, when we talk about sports in Athens, we are talking about the University of Georgia (UGA)!  The series is the work of poeanne, Pitty Pat, and GeoMonkeyTiger!.

Each multicache will feature a particular sport at UGA.  The first stage of each multicache will take you someplace important to that sport.  You will need to observe the area to answer the question posed on the cache page.  Enter your answer into Certitude.  Your reward for the correct answer will be the coordinates to the final as well as 1/12th of the code you will need to enter to unlock the coordinates for GC9PWQJ - 13- Athens Awesome Athletic Multi Adventure BONUS!

The finals for this series are a relatively short distance away and fairly close together.  It may make sense to gather the stage 1 requirements for all the caches in the series before heading to the stage 2 locations.

There is some information about each sport on its corresponding cache page.

The entire series can be completed in a few hours.  Each cache features a virtual stage 1 and a physical find at stage 2.

The Sport - Golf 🏌️‍♀

Men's golf

In the spring of 1924, a handful of Georgia students formed what was the university's first-ever golf team. In those days, the team did not have coaches; rather, one of the players served as captain and made the decisions that guided the squad. Some of the first captains for the Bulldogs were Harris Jones, John Grant, Billy Oliver and Hugh Nunnally.

The Bulldogs' first coach came on board in 1930 as Murray Soule took the position. He was succeeded by J.M. McFadden (1933-35), who passed the torch to R.L. Keener (1935-42). Keener led the Bulldogs to their first-ever SEC championship in 1941. Because of World War II, the Bulldogs disbanded for the next few years.

Overall, the men's golf team leads all Georgia sports with 29 conference championships, including seven since 2000 (1941, 1950–52, 1957–59, 1961–65, 1969–72, 1977–78, 1982–83, 1988, 1998, 2000–01, 2004, 2006, 2009–10, 2016).

Notable alumni include 2-time Masters' champion Bubba Watson, as well as the winner of the 2019 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Kevin Kisner.

Women's Golf

It all began in 1967, when Liz Murphey joined the University of Georgia staff as an assistant physical education professor and golf coach. She built Georgia into a national powerhouse...a status the Bulldogs have maintained for decades. Today, the Georgia tradition is perhaps as deep as any in the country.

In the past three decades, the Bulldogs have earned four national championships - one team and three individual titles. Georgia has won an SEC-best 19 team and individual league titles.

On the team front, Georgia has finished among the top 20 schools at the national championships during 26 of the last 38 years - 20 of those in the top 10. UGA has captured 11 SEC team crowns, including an unprecedented three straight from 1997-99.

Individually, Georgia golfers have posted 36 top-20 individual finishes at nationals. Four of those came in 2001 alone, when Reilley Rankin, Laura Henderson, Angela Jerman and Summer Sirmons all did so en route to securing the team national title. The aforementioned quartet is among a ledger of 32 golfers who have been named All-America a combined 57 times. Seven Bulldog golfers have combined to win eight SEC individual titles, including two-time winner Shauna Estes (1997 and 1999), eight SEC Golfer of the Year honors and nine SEC Freshman of the Year accolades.
