Geocache Description:

On June 29, 1907, West Seattle residents voted overwhelmingly, 325 to 8, to become part of the city of Seattle. Back then, one of the strongest arguments in favor of annexation was the critical need for potable water.

"There is no city in the world with a better water supply than our big neighbor across the bay (referring to Seattle)... and this can be ours for the asking" ("Editorial").

It wasn't easy though getting water from a pumping station near Harbor Ave SW & SW Spokane St (near the WS bridge) up to a high point on this hill.  So the Seattle Water Department constructed this 1,000,000-gallon standpipe in 1927 in order to replace nine old wooden tanks that had been on the same site for the previous decade.

This tower, along with another tank at 38th Ave SW and SW Barton St, supplied all of West Seattle’s water until 1932 when the 68,000,000-million gallon "in-ground" West Seattle Reservoir was completed at 8th Avenue SW and SW Trenton Street. This was almost twenty years after the Water Department had acquired a large tract of land for the reservoir, one of two planned for West Seattle. Back then, residents were waiting for plentiful water.  Today, we are still waiting, but this time, it's for Light Rail.

West Seattle’s Charlestown Water Tower

Both the water tower and the container blend in pretty well to their environment.

The coverage can be a little spotty but you should be able to get within a few feet.

A TOTT may help you extract the container but you also might not need one.  Either way, please return it to it's original spot as best you can.

Also, please refrain from attaching an image of the container. The goal is to keep it a challenge for future catchers.
